5" vs 6" Gutters — What Actually Matters

Most homes are properly fitted with 5-inch seamless gutters, which handle normal water flow without issue.

While 6-inch gutters are sometimes recommended, they are typically only necessary for:

• Very large homes
• Wide fascia boards
• Metal roofs where water runs off faster and can overshoot the gutter

The more important factor in water flow is the downspout size, not just the width of the gutter.

We install oversized 3" x 4" downspouts, which allow water to exit the system more efficiently than standard downspouts.

Some companies push larger gutters as an upgrade, but in most cases, proper sizing and correct downspout placement matter more than simply going wider.
